In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and SEAL’s 5th Anniversary, we’re proud to share stories that honor home language and culture. One special story that resonates is Karen’s, a program manager with SEAL. As an English learner who moved to the U.S. from Nicaragua at seven, she is deeply committed to supporting dual language learners and their families. Karen is also passionate about collaborating with educators and school leaders to align and build on practices across grade levels, ensuring equitable access to education, and enhancing students' social and academic development within an asset-based and affirming environment.

Hear Karen share her story about reclaiming her identity in her own words:

A Memorable Experience

My memorable experience with SEAL began during my interview, where our organization's deep commitment to honoring every English Learner’s identity and celebrating family, culture, and language shone through. I was profoundly moved when a panel member asked how I prefer to pronounce my name. That was a question no one had ever asked before.

You see, at age seven, when I first arrived in the United States, my teacher told me I had to use the English pronunciation of my name, and I did without question, using it both at school and later in my professional life. I was “Karen” everywhere I went, but at home with my familia, I was “Kah-ren”!

Reclaiming True Name

SEAL’s genuine interest in my identity allowed me to reclaim my true name, and share my family's journey from Nicaragua including my Mami's remarkable path overcoming language barriers to build a 25-year teaching career in the U.S., culminating in a total of 55 years as an educator, with dedicated service to students and families.

Feeling Seen and Affirmed

At SEAL, I have felt profoundly seen and culturally affirmed. Working alongside such exceptional individuals who are all passionately dedicated to our mission is truly inspiring. I am incredibly proud to be a part of SEAL and deeply grateful for the opportunity to make a meaningful impact.
