Project ROYAL

In 2016, SEAL partnered with the Loyola Marymount University (LMU) School of Education on Project ROYAL (Rigorous Opportunities for Young-children to Accelerate Language), a transformative initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Education. This multi-year effort aimed to enhance classroom strategies in grades TK-3 to improve outcomes for English Learners and other students, while also building a bilingual teacher pipeline and establishing a replicable professional development model.

Through collaborations with Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) - Local District Central, LAUSD's Multicultural and Multilingual Education Department (MMED), the Wexford Institute, and Sobrato Philanthropies, Project ROYAL trained 84 in-service teachers and 18 LMU pre-service teachers in SEAL strategies.

Project ROYAL also prioritized leadership and family engagement. Principals, coaches, and district leaders received leadership training, while families participated in classroom gallery walks and workshops to foster collaboration and student success.

In 2022, Project ROYAL outcomes were presented to the U.S. Department of Education, Office of English Language Acquisition through the comprehensive Project ROYAL-SEAL 2016-2021 Five-Year Evaluation/Research Studies Report. Visit LMU Project Royal Page for more information and links.

Key results are summarized in LMU’s Project ROYAL Impact Highlights report.
